Seasonal Links

This page provides links to important safety information pertinent to the current season.  With snow in the forcast, this page includes several links to pages that will provide you with the necessary information to survive the unexpected night out.

AVALANCHE.ORG - Direct links to various avalanche forecast centers throughout North America.  Be sure you know what the avalanche conditions are before you go out, and always be prepared by carrying avalanche beacons, probes, and shovels.

WEATHER.GOV - The NOAA provides many detailed weather forecasts.  Be sure to check weather conditions before you venture out, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Hypothermia Information by Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht  - An excellent resource for survival from Backcountry emergencies, such as submersion, etc..

Some key things to remember before you venture out into the backcountry:

bullet

FILE A FLIGHT PLAN - Always let someone know where you will be traveling and when you plan on returning.  If plans end up deviating from what is planned, let the person know that your plans have changed.

bullet

EVEN IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA, TAKE A MAP - Even those who believe they are intimately familiar with the area they are visiting get lost.  A simple map and compass can help you get back to safety.

bullet

HUG-A-TREE AND SURVIVE - This is a program that we teach to elementary school children, scout troops, and church groups.  The program focuses on what to do if you get lost.  The main thing is to admit when you are lost, and stay in one spot.

bullet

CARRY SOME BASIC SURVIVAL GEAR - Most people thing mega-$$$ when it comes to backcountry survival gear; however, some common everyday gear can save your life.  For example, a large leaf bag from home can keep you warm and dry if you must spend the night out.  A whistle is an excellent way to signal searchers, whereas yelling will cause you to loose your voice quickly.

bullet

ALWAYS KEEP A POSITIVE ATTITUDE - A positive attitude will keep you alive.
